Editorial: NFL should keep playoff structure

A team with a losing record made it into the playoffs of the National Football League. So what?
If a team wins its division, even if it is with a losing record, it deserves to enter the playoffs. It’s a division champion. It even deserves to host the game.
If the NFL changed the structure of the playoffs, it would lessen the importance of division rivalries, and that is where the fun of football on Sunday lies for many fans. The easiest way to make the playoffs is to win your division. It’s that simple.
Why complicate the playoff structure with rules saying no team with a losing record can make the playoffs? Why render an entire division meaningless?
We are glad the Seattle Seahawks won on Saturday over the defending Super Bowl champions New Orleans Saints. It sends a message: Just because the Seahawks had a losing record, they still were a division champ. They will play next week, while the much-touted Philadelphia Eagles stay home.
Because of the need for a labor contract, the offseason is going to bring many changes in the NFL. We hope the existing structure of the playoffs isn’t one of them.
