To everyone who donated to the United Way.

The Freeborn County United Way’s campaign ended Friday about $60,000 short of their $650,000 goal. Still, with everything that happened this year and people’s pocketbooks not getting any larger, we think the county got about as close as it could get to the goal. Thank you everyone for supporting the United Way, which supports many local agencies. People in Freeborn County receive services like education, job coaching, health services, counseling, transportation, crisis response and essential needs such as shelter and food.

To the NFL for its statement following the Brett Favre investigation.

The NFL concluded its investigation into allegations that Brett Favre had sent sexually-explicit text messages to a New York Jets reporter when he played for the Jets in 2008.

So after a lengthy investigation, the NFL released a lengthy statement to basically say that while they found no evidence of misconduct on Favre’s part, he and others involved didn’t exactly cooperate.

Big surprise there. It happened over two years ago and some of the “evidence” and “witnesses” were no longer available, according to the report.

However, towards the end of this statement was the following:

“The commissioner notified Favre that he has been fined $50,000 for his failure to cooperate with the investigation in a forthcoming manner. Commissioner Goodell stated to Favre that if he had found a violation of the league’s workplace conduct policies, he would have imposed a substantially higher level of discipline.”

So basically, they’re saying it’s OK to do something wrong, just don’t get caught. Apparently the morale here is that if you’re guilty, don’t cooperate. Maybe that little tidbit should have been left out.

To the potential sale of a portion of the former A.L. Golf Club.

The Albert Lea community was thrilled when they heard during the Monday City Council meeting that there is a potential sale in the works for 53 acres of this city landmark.

Though the sale to St. John’s Lutheran Home is not final, we are excited to hear what may come out of this project.

The former golf club provided many fond memories in its day, and we are glad the land may be on its way to becoming something positive for the community.
