This former Lea College Fieldhouse has been an ice arena since 1976. In recent years it has received some upgrades, and the bleachers still need replacing, but you have to admit, the facility has served Albert Lea well. Indeed, it is on the far west edge of town and too far away from a good commercial district. But 35 years and still being the center of hockey for a town that loves the sport is pretty good stuff. You could even say it has outlasted the Metrodome.
To Lake Mills Community Development Corp.
This praise is for creating the Community Cares Coalition, formed to help workers laid off at Cummins and their families deal with the transition. It has created a brochure with resources. Community Cares Coalition also has established an emergency fund for people who do not fall within guidelines for assistance, and it has done work to bolster a local food shelf.
To anyone who damages a school.
Whether it is breaking in and committing arson or tagging a garbage bin with spray paint, damaging school property angers everyone. Think of all the local residents who pay their taxes to support these public facilities. Think of all the children who learn the things they need to know to prepare them for adulthood. When a person damages a school, they damage something that belongs to all of us, young and old. We are all part of the Albert Lea School District.
And we are all part of Lakeview Elementary School, and our thoughts are with their faculty, staff and students this weekend.
