A local boy had a couple of wishes come true Friday evening.

Morgan Hensch, 10, is the son of Jon and Heidi of rural Alden. Hensch had a wish granted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Minnesota and had a send-off party with family and friends at Pizza Ranch in Albert Lea before he and his parents leave for Disney World in Florida.

“One of Morgan’s teachers thought we should put in for it,” Jon said.

After being interviewed by the foundation in October, Morgan’s wish was granted. His parents were also excited for the surprise they had planned at the party, which was having a couple of characters from the “Star Wars” franchise present at the party.

“He likes ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Harry Potter,’” Jon said.

Jon said Morgan is a happy-go-lucky kid who’s always thinking of others. Morgan has mitochondrial disease that comes with some complications. Jon said it’s hard for Morgan to get out much, so the family is excited for the trip.

People with mitochondrial disease have failing mitochondria, which are cells that produce most of the energy the human body needs to function. If the mitochondria fail, the body can’t convert food and oxygen into energy, which effects every part of the body including the heart, brain, muscles and lungs.

“His biggest problem is energy — day-to-day his does pretty darn well,” Heidi said.

Jody Boser, a wish granter with Make-A-Wish Foundation of Minnesota, said a trip to Disney World is a popular wish. Their goal will be to make the trip as stress-free for the family as possible.

“It’s really all about the child and what they want,” Boser said.

Volunteers will get the family to the airport, through the gate and other volunteers will meet them in Florida to help make travel easier. If they family chooses, they can have a send-off party like Morgan had Friday.

“Their family and friends show up to support them,” Boser said.

Many family and friends were present at Morgan’s party Friday. Some of his past teachers from United South Central school in Wells were there, and Morgan’s grandpa, Larry Lillibridge, said he was enjoying the party.

“I’ve taken care of him since he was a baby,” Lillibridge said.

Jon said he’s thankful that his workplace, Minnesota Corrugated Box, is flexible with time off, which he needs when Morgan is sick. Heidi, too, said her workplace, United Hospital District in Blue Earth, has been helpful when she needs to stay home with Morgan.

“They’ve just been wonderful in supporting us and our family,” Heidi said.

Jon said Morgan is excited to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park and meeting Goofy.

“I just want to see his face when he sees the castle,” Jon said.
