Bulldogs advance, run into 21-0 West Fork

LAKE MILLS, Iowa — The Lake Mills Bulldogs boys’ basketball team held the St. Ansgar Saints to just two points in the third quarter Thursday and won 52-33 here in the Class 2A District 7 quarterfinals.
The Bulldogs (19-4) will now face the undefeated, No. 1-seeded and No. 3-ranked West Fork Warhawks (21-0) in the semifinals Tuesday in Clear Lake, Iowa.
“Our third-quarter defense was the key to the game,” Bulldogs coach Kyle Menke said. “We rebounded well and did a great job of contesting shots.”
The Bulldogs led 18-17 at halftime but outscored the Saints 15-2 in the third quarter and entered the fourth with a 33-19 lead.
“Tyler Rice and Tim Brandt hit some big shots in the second half,” Menke said.
Brandt and Rice, the hot-shooting guards, made three and two 3-pointers, respectively. Rice finished with 15 points and Brandt finished with nine.
Marcus Gaskill led the Bulldogs with another double-double, scoring 18 points with 10 rebounds. Alex Grunhovd had 10 rebounds, eight points and six assists.
The Bulldogs shot 11-of-16 from the free throw line and committed just six fouls in the game. The Saints were 0-of-2 from the free throw line.
Jackson Steinberg and Casey Mayer led the Saints with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
