Damages are estimated at $70,000 in the classroom at Lakeview Elementary School where a fire was intentionally lit a week ago, Albert Lea fire investigator Doug Johnson said Wednesday.

This includes some structural damage, along with damages to contents of the classroom, many of which were destroyed by water damage after sprinklers turned on in the room.

Contents damaged included a Smart Board, computers and desks, among other items.

Johnson said officials are still searching for the person — or people — who set the fire late last Thursday in a fourth-grade classroom on the lower level of the school.

He is continuing to follow up on a few tips that have been received on an arson hot line regarding the incident, and people who might have any information regarding the fire are still encouraged to call 800-723-2020.

Rewards of up to $2,500 are being given for information leading to the identification of people responsible for the fire as part of the Minnesota Arson Reward Project.

Authorities were alerted to the fire at about 11:15 p.m. last Thursday, after motion detectors went off followed by the fire alarms.

The fire was contained to a 5-foot-by-5-foot space, though more damage came from water, after sprinklers turned on in the room.

Officials believe someone broke into one of the windows of the classroom and then started the fire near a workstation desk.

Classes resumed Monday after the school was closed to students Friday.

Albert Lea School District Superintendent Mike Funk said crews were scheduled to finish repairing and moving equipment into the room Wednesday, with students back in the classroom Wednesday afternoon or today.
