Rebels claim 1st Gopher Conf. title

The United South Central girls’ basketball won their first conference title in school history Thursday with a 57-35 at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.
The Rebels (20-6, 15-1 Gopher) finished tied atop the Gopher Conference with New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale Geneva (21-3, 15-1) and also notched their second 20-win season in school history.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Rebels coach Stu Hendrickson said. “I’m really happy for our girls to accomplish that.”
Senior center Kayla Stenzel led the Rebels to their 12th straight conference win with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Senior forward Val Sahr had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and sophomore Amanda Allis chipped in 10 rebounds, nine points and four blocks.
The Rebels jumped out to a 35-7 halftime lead and out rebounded WEM 42-21 for the game.
The Rebels, seeded fourth in the Section 2AA tournament, play again Tuesday against fifth-seeded Kasson-Mantorville in the sub-section quarterfinals at 7 p.m. in Wells.
