ST. PAUL (AP) — Cameras will be allowed to cover civil cases in Minnesota courtrooms under a new order from the state Supreme Court.

Starting July 1, judges in civil cases can allow media coverage with video cameras, still cameras and audio devices. The new order says the decision on whether to allow cameras is up to the judge in the courtroom — not the lawyers for either side.

The rule issued on Friday says no recording will be allowed for child custody hearings, divorces and juvenile court as well as some other types of cases. Cameras will continue to be allowed in criminal cases if all sides agree — but that almost never happens.

The state Supreme Court will allow the recordings for two years, then decide whether to continue to allow them.
