Roy Nystrom’s name shot up the record books this season as he finished the year with 633 career coaching victories.
Now his name will be honored at City Arena as the arena’s Blue Rink will be renamed Nystrom Rink at the beginning of the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team’s 2011-12 season.
Nystrom is the team’s coach.
At the team’s home opener, a Nystrom Rink sign will be unveiled inside the facility.
Plans for the renaming went through Albert Lea’s Blue Line Club and Hockey Association before being OK’d by the City Council. The plan was kept a secret from Nystrom and his wife, Jan, for months until the news was finally broke Sunday at the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team’s year-end banquet at Wedgewood Cove Golf Club.
“I’m overwhelmed Nystrom said. “This is something my wife and family will always cherish. I will, too.”
Nystrom admitted the honor came as a big surprise. Jan said she began crying as the news was announced.
“I’ve had 38 great years in Albert Lea,” Nystrom said. “I’m lucky.”
The name Nystrom Rink is tenative.
