A kitchen fire was reported at 4:21 p.m. Wednesday at 1017 Plainview Lane after a plastic toy set on top of an electric range reportedly started fire.

Albert Lea Fire Department Capt. Scott Hanna said someone at the house accidentally leaned up against one of the push buttons on the stove, which turned on the burner.

Hanna said the family had purchased a fire extinguisher the day before and was able to put out the fire on their own. There was a lot of smoke but no blaze when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters ventilated the house and educated the family on how to clean up from the incident, Hanna said.

“It was a very nice outcome to a traditional accident you see in homes,” Hanna said.

Other than the toy and a lot of smoke in the house, there was minimal damage.
