50 years ago – 1961
Wells High School won the District 5 basketball title with a 67-55 victory over Ceylon. Wells was led by Ron Zielie with 19 points, Ron Fiest with 15 and Ron Meyer with 14. In the semifinal round of Region 2, Edgerton defeated Wells 75-63. Darrel Kruen scored 24 points and Dean Veenhof 21 for Edgerton. Dan Roberts had 14 points, Meyer and Fiest each had 13 points for Wells.
25 years ago – 1986
Trophy-winners from Albert Lea at the seventh annual Billey’s Battle of the Bench included Kevin Brua, third place in the 160 pounds and under class, Scott Brua, second place in the 185-210 pounds class, and Dennis Schmidt, second place in the 210 pounds and over class.
Winners of the 39th annual Albert Lea Men’s City Bowling Tournament: Team – Lou Rich Machine Tool (team members were Steve Seberson, Doug Riskedahl, Todd Enderson, Al Johnson and Stan Nelson); All Events – Loren Kaiser; Singles – Lee Holstad; Doubles – Shawn Walton and Ray Bliss.
•Named to the Girls’ Gopher All-Conference Basketball Team: Blooming Prairie – Jeanne Kruckeberg, Sheila Lembke and Janet Pesch; Bethlehem Academy – Shaune Misgen and Shelly Angell; Medford – Joanne Schuler and Beth Keller; Ellendale-Geneva – Kelly Lageson and Tina Wangness; Glenville – Lynette Vanek; Waterville-Elysian – Sherry Fessell; New Richland – Hartland – Michelle Thompson; Janesville – Vicki Rauchman.
10 years ago – 2001
Nick Cunningham, of Albert Lea, was named to the All-Big Nine Conference Basketball Team. Tigers receiving honorable mention were Chris Rebelein, Matt Ladwig and David Dahl.
• Merle Behr, of Albert Lea, a member of the Albert Lea Bowling Association Hall of Fame, bowled his second 300 game at Holiday Lanes in the Holiday Classic League.
Jesse Reyerson, a 1999 graduate of Glenville-Emmons High School and a sophomore on the Luther College wrestling team, earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa.
