Teacher of the Year to be picked
One of six finalists will be named Albert Lea school district’s Teacher of the Year Wednesday at a banquet at Albert Lea High School. Information about the finalists was published in the Sunday Tribune, and a story about the winner will be printed in the Tribune on Thursday.
Man to be sentenced for child porn
An Albert Lea man is slated to be sentenced today in Freeborn County District Court after pleading guilty in January to possessing child pornography as part of a plea agreement.
Travis Jon Holst pleaded guilty to two of his 12 felony counts of child pornography possession. His remaining 10 counts were dismissed.
Authorities reportedly found multimedia files on Holst’s computer during a search of his residence that involved 10 or 12-year-old children engaged in sexual acts.
NCAA title game is tonight
CBS will air the title game between Butler and Connecticut tonight at 8 p.m.
The eighth-seeded Bulldogs are trying to finish the deal after coming oh-so-close last season, and the third-seeded Huskies talking about shocking the world with their 11th straight victory after a regular season that foreshadowed none of this success.
Twins home opener is Friday
The Minnesota Twins play their first home game at 3 p.m. Friday against Oakland.
Look for Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew to make the ceremonial first pitch.
Rick Oliva, son of former Twin, Tony Oliva, and Maria Versalles, daughter of late Twin, Zoilo Versalles, will perform the national anthem. Rick will play guitar and Maria will sing.
In another ceremony shortly before the game, the Twins will unveil a life-size bronze statue of Oliva near Gate 6 of the ballpark.
In the on-field pre-game ceremony, Twins coach Jerry White will raise the Twins 2010 Central Division championship flag. Broadcaster John Gordon, who is retiring after the season, will raise the Twins Territory flag.
Twins semi-retired executive Jerry Bell will raise the Hennepin County flag, and Gen. John Vessey, 89, a former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and a native of Minneapolis, will raise the American flag.
F-16 fight jets from Duluth will fly over Target Field during the national anthem.
New at Target Field this season will be an outfield sign counting up to 600 home runs for Twins designated hitter Jim Thome, who enters the season with 589 career homers.
There also will be a sign counting down to the number of games remaining until former Twin Bert Blyleven is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 24.
Spring sports begin today
The bulk of the spring sports schedule begins today in Glenville where the Glenville-Emmons baseball team hosts Saint Clair at 4:30 p.m. Albert Lea, United South Central and New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva all host home games at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and NRHEG hosts Albert Lea boys’ and girls’ track and field at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
