WELLS — Jason Huper hit a game-winning single Tuesday to cap a three-run seventh and lift the United South Central Rebels baseball team to a 3-2 win over the Martin County West Mavericks.
The Mavericks pulled ahead 2-0 in the first inning before Rebels’ pitcher Anthony Satenzel kept them off the board for the rest of the game.
After five scoreless innings, Dakota Farley led off the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit single followed by another single from Lucas George.
Following the opening two hits, pitcher Lucas Reker relieved the Mavericks’ starter and walked three straight Rebels batters allowing the Rebels to tie the game at two. With one out, Huper hit the game winner.
“It was a good way to start off the season,” Rebels coach Pat Frank said. “The kids hung in there and didn’t give up.”
Five of the Rebels players had no varsity experience entering the game.
Huper finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, and George finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Frank said that Stenzel pitched a great ballgame. Stenzel finished with 12 strikeouts and two walks.
The Rebels play again at 5 p.m. Thursday against Randolph at Wells.
