Successful kindergarten family night

On March 28 almost half of the Hawthorne Elementary School kindergarten families gathered in the cafeteria to enjoy a chicken noodle soup meal before SOUPer Bowl Sports Night. After families ate dinner they were invited to the kindergarten classrooms to make educational learning games, which they were able to bring home. The games consisted of: a sight words in space game, an addition and subtraction frog file folder, and reading non-fiction animal books and making playing cards for the animals. Families also brought gently-used books from home and were able to trade them with other families gently-used books. The school staff would like to thank everyone who was able to make it to this fun kindergarten family night. The next family night will take place in May. Staff will be talking about ways to work with your child over the summer to get them ready for first grade.

The play was performed by theater students from Minnesota State University, Mankato. “Iktomi” is based on the local Native American Dakota stories of the spider-trickster spirit and is a symbol of chaos in the Dakota culture. The tales told were Iktomi and the Ducks, Iktomi and the Buzzard, and Iktomi and the Buffalo Skull.

Staff would like to thank the Halverson S.P.I.R.I.T. organization for funding the trip for the first graders and the district kindergarten teachers for applying and receiving a Perpich Arts Grant that funded the trip for kindergartners.
