To April lasting into May.

We expect rain and more rain in April. May is supposed to be one of the most beautiful months of the year. It’s a time when the flowers bloom, the sun shines and there are no bugs and low humidity. This May, however, it is wet and soppy. The rain has spoiled many plans — garden planting, baseball and softball games, outdoor walking and running, bike rides, weddings, wedding receptions, graduation parties, auto races and on and on. And it has made many the farmers late to plant fields.

Maybe there is a silver lining in these rain clouds. If May decided to act like April, perhaps June — a month that last year brought destruction from the skies — won’t act like June.

To the fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.

Memorial Day is Monday. Don’t just think of it as a day off from work. Make sure you remember loved ones and community members who gave their lives for their country. We encourage people to attend cemetery services. We say thank you to the ones who died in combat and defended the freedoms we cherish. Our debt can never be repaid to you.

To bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the street.

Most bike riders hug the curb on the correct side of the roadway and ride safely without disturbing motorized traffic. However, now and then some bike riders are spotted riding on the left side of the street directly into oncoming cars. Why? Do they think they are safer? Are they just uninformed? The fact is, bikers on the wrong side are a traffic hazard and give a bad name to the bicyclists who obey traffic laws. Stay safe and ride right, please.
