Funk’s search is concerning

Albert Lea Superintendant Mike Funk circulated a district memo that was cited by the Albert Lea Tribune, Friday, May 6. The Tribune reporter wrote “Funk said he was recruited for the position in Rochester and that he wasn’t actively looking to leave Albert Lea.”
He could have replied, “Thanks, but no thanks! I like Albert Lea.” He was one of the seven finalists, but not one of the three finalists. Can’t fault him for trying to improve himself. Employment agencies (headhunters) keep in touch with the people they place.
Mike Funk replaced longtime Superintendent Dave Prescott, who retired several years ago. Mr. Funk may be testing the water. However, applying for the Rochester vacancy must concern the Albert Lea school board.
The current board is fortunate to have excellent members, headed by Chairman Bill Leland. Should a vacancy occur look locally, a resident residing in the Albert Lea or Freeborn County area or neighboring counties, Dave Prescott, again comes to mind.
Recently Albert Lea City Council hired a city manager. Terms of his employment were reported in the Albert Lea Tribune. If the employee voluntarily leaves, does the contract provide some or all of the city’s hiring expenses be withheld from his or her final pay check? If not, it should be!
