50 years ago — 1961

The Albert Lea High School tennis team won the District 2 title by defeating Austin 2-1 and advanced to Region 1 play. Paul Wilke and Gene Hanson won singles matches for the Tigers.

In District 2 track and field, Albert Lea scored 62 1/2 points to Austin’s 60 1/2 and Freeborn’s 40. Winning for the Tigers was Jeff Brooke in the discus, who set a record for District 2. Other Tigers winners were Steve Claybourn in the shot put, Rog Kittelson in the pole vault, Lowell Syverson in the broad jump and Syverson, Kittelson, Don Nelson and Dave Palmer in the 880-yard relay.

Albert Lea defeated Red Wing 8-4 in a Big Nine Conference baseball game. Dennis Tostenson was the winning pitcher, and Dave Palmer had three hits for the Tigers.

25 years ago — 1986

Jeff Bowan of Albert Lea scored a hole in one with a six iron on the 183-yard 11th hole at Green Lea Golf Course.

Albert Lea graduate Chris Hall, running for the University of Wisconsin, qualified for the NCAA Division III National Track and Field championships.

The Glenville High School softball team won the Gopher Conference title with an 8-0 record by defeating Waterville-Elysian 9-1. Winning pitcher Lynette Vanek finished with a 13-0 season record and a 40-2 lifetime mark. Melanie Steene, Holly Tews and Brigett Matter each had two hits for Glenville. This was their fifth straight Gopher Conference title.

10 years ago — 2001

Junior Jill Delger threw a no-hitter for the Glenville softball team in their 10-0 win over Southland. Fallon Lorenzen, Jill Yost and Jolene Peterson led Glenville with two hits each.

New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva softball defeated Blooming Prairie 4-0 behind the no-hit pitching of Erin Anderson. This was the sixth no-hitter of the season and the third in a row for Anderson.

The Albert Lea baseball team defeated Rochester John Marshall 3-2. The Tigers were behind 2-1 with two outs in the seventh inning when Phil Wacholz walked and Andy Drenth hit a home run for the win.
