The cause of the fire that badly damaged a trailer in the Rainbow Terrace trailer court Sunday night is undetermined, according to an Albert Lea Fire Department spokesman this morning.

Firefighter Bart Berven said while there is a possibility that smoking materials — cigarettes — caused the fire, investigators are continuing to look at other possibilities.

The trailer, at 712 Larimore Circle, was placarded as uninhabitable Monday, a day after the blaze.

While the heaviest damage was done to the bedroom — where the fire is believed to have started — it spread down the hallway and into the living room and kitchen areas, Berven said. The fire also damaged the roof and walls.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday.

When firefighters arrived, fire was coming out of the door and windows of the structure.

Berven said the man who resided at the trailer, Italio Gomez, told authorities that “the fire exploded,” and that he attempted to throw water on it and thought he could put it out himself, but before he knew it, he had to leave his home.

He made it safely outside without any injuries.

The park manager and the manager’s brother also came to the scene and tried to put water on the trailer, but the fire built too quickly.

Not much exterior damage was visible at the trailer on Monday.
