Events abound for the entire family this weekend

The 25th annual Eddie Cochran Weekend car show will be held rain or shine this weekend. The event is sponsored by the Low Bucks Car Club. For a full listing of events see the story on the Front Page.

Glenville Days will also be held this weekend with many returning events and some new games. For a full scheudule of events see Page 5.

Friday

• The VFW and American Legion will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A hot dog stand will be at Nelson’s Market Place.

• The Alden American Legion is holding a pork chop supper from 5 to 8 p.m. Menu includes pork chop, coleslaw, beans and bun for $9. A flag retirement ceremony will be at 7 p.m.

Saturday

• Canoeing, kayaking and paddle boating will be available for free as part of the Sample Saturday Series from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brookside Boathouse.

• The Albert Lea Farmers Market starts at 9 a.m. and goes until noon in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.

• The Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club presents the 20th annual Take a Kid Fishing event from 9 a.m. to noon at Edgewater Park in Albert Lea. There will be free fishing poles, bait and trophies awarded. Food and drinks will be available.

• The Relay for Life — Steve Kirsch Motorcycle Run will be held. Registration is at 11 a.m. at the Aragon Bar in Albert Lea. Cost is $10 for first rider and $5 for passengers.

• The 10th annual Vietnam Veterans Recognition Picnic will be held at 1 p.m. at Swensrud Park in Northwood, Iowa. Burgers and brats are free, but salads, side dishes and desserts are appreciated. All Vietnam veterans, families and guests are invited. For more information call Jerry Parmley at 641-293-5131.

• The Albert Lea Art Center will hold an English Tea at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at the art center. Feel free to dress up accordingly.

• The Freeborn County Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party will hold a picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. at Edgewater Park. Donations will be accepted.

Sunday

• The Cloverleaf Lions and Lakeview Lions present the annual Flight Breakfast at the Albert Lea Airport from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, ham, eggs, milk and coffee. Adults are $6, and children 12 and under are $3. Park and Rec will present “Touch A Truck” where kids can see emergency vehicles and meet hometown heroes from 9 a.m. to noon at the airport.

• United Methodist Church in Albert Lea is holding a worship celebration in conjuntion with Eddie Cochran Weekend. The church is celebrating its 133rd birthday. Events begin at 10:45 a.m. with a rock ’n’ roll worship. Musicians Barb and Neil Lang will participate with music from the ’50s. Following will be a sloppy joe meal and fun activities for all.

• A Battle of the Bands block party will be held at 11 a.m. in the north Albert Lea business district, near East Plaza Street. Food and fun will be available from local vendors and organizations. Signed and unsigned bands will perform and compete for prizes.

• Music students of Sharon L. Astrup-Scott will present a recital at 6:30 p.m. at Thorne Crest Retirement Community.
