Mayoral term discussion to continue Mon.

Discussion about Albert Lea’s mayoral terms is slated to continue Monday during a follow-up Albert Lea Charter Commission meeting.
The meeting, recessed from May 2, is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
On the agenda is discussion about an amendment to the charter that would change mayoral terms from two to four years starting with mayors elected after Nov. 1, 2012. The commission is also expected to ultimately vote whether to recommend the change.
Proponents of the amendment say the change would remove the distraction of too frequent of re-election campaigns and provide greater continuity for the Albert Lea City Council and effective leadership for the community.
Opponents say it would take away the more frequent opportunity of the people to vote for change if they don’t like the direction the city is moving.
The Charter Commission recessed its May meeting without a vote on the issue because commissioners wanted to garner additional public input and have questions answered about it.
If the Charter Commission approves a mayoral term change, the city will publish a notice of a public hearing to be held at an upcoming City Council meeting.
If the council approves it unanimously, the change would go into affect 90 days after legal publication.
However, a valid petition drive within 60 days of that publication can halt the amendment, sending it to the voters for approval.
If the Charter Commission does not recommend the amendment, it can still become a reality through other means.
