50 years ago — 1961

The Albert Lea High School football team was shutout by the Owatonna Indians in their season opening game 20-0. Tom McKey led the Tigers’ offense with 58 rushing yards.

Larry Engleby rushed for 127 yards for Lake Mills High School in their 21-7 football victory over North Central of Manly.

Harmon Killebrew hit home run No. 41 for the Minnesota Twins in their 5-4 win over the Kansas City Athletics.

25 years ago — 1986

The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Mankato West by scores of 15-11, 15-11 and 15-8 and raised their Big Nine Conference record to 3-0. Julie Coughlin had nine aces and four ace serves for Albert Lea.

The Glenville High School volleyball team defeated New Richland-Hartland 15-4, 15-1 and 15-1 in the Gopher Conference. Holly Tews had eight ace serves for Glenville. Glenville has a 3-1 record in the conference.

The Alden-Conger Blackhawks improved to 2-0 in the Border League East League with a 26-20 win in overtime against Waldorf-Pemberton. Scoring touchdowns for the Blackhawks were Wayne Burgess, Darren Dylla, Matt Potter and Kent Klocek. Klocek gained 101 yards on 17 carries.

10 years ago — 2001

Junior Mariah Levison scored the goal and Liz Reynen was in goal for the shutout for Albert Lea girls’s soccer in their 1-0 victory over Northfield.

The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team evened their Big Nine Conference record to 2-2 with a 7-0 win over Faribault. Winning in singles were Danielle Jacobs at No. 1, Elizabeth Schroeder at No. 2, Karen Leonard at No. 3 and Becky Berkhofer at No. 4. Winning in doubles were Mandy Blenka and Jasey Porter at No. 1, Nicole Rafdal and Ashley Helgerson at No. 2 and Nicole Merfeld and Amanda Rose at No. 3.

The Alden/Mansfield 4-H softball club won the older mixed division. Team members were Brad Boettcher, Erik Bryson, Ben Faugstad, Brady Gooden, Dan Halvorson, Chad Harig, Katie Johnson, Jennifer Boettcher, Alison Newman, Patty Boettcher, Molly Wasmoen, Peter Faugstad, Matt Zeller, Anthony Kruger, Shelly Zeller, Brandon Loyd, Jeremy Loyd and David Schmidt.
