50 years ago — 1961
The Albert Lea football team evened its season record at 1-1 with a 13-7 victory over the Northfield Raiders. Curt Pickavance gained 127 yards on 23 carries and scored a touchdown for the Tigers. Tom McKey scored the second touchdown for the Tigers.
Dick Jones, a 16-year old Albert Lea High School junior, defeated Clair Friday 2-1 to win the Green Lea Golf Course club championship.
The Freeborn Yeomen football team shut out the Bricelyn Braves 24-0. Scoring touchdowns for the Yeomen were Alan Beach, Brad Miller and Les Honstad.
Mike Lien threw two touchdown passes to Larry Holstad and ran for a touchdown for the Northwood Vikings in their 13-7 football win over St. Ansgar.
25 years ago — 1986
The Glenville High School football team defeated Ellendale-Geneva 14-8 for their first victory after 70 straight losses.
•The Alden-Conger volleyball team improved to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the Border League East after defeating Freeborn by scores of 15-7, 15-8 and 15-9. Pam Dulas had six ace serves and 11 ace hits and Ann Bleckeberg had 10 ace hits for A-C.
The Albert Lea girls’ cross country team defeated Mankato East 15-57 and Rochester John Marshall 17-44. Placing for Albert Lea were Sara Hartman, first, Stephanie Hartman, second, Stephanie Nystrom, third, Robin Hayes, fifth, Jenny Senske, sixth, Tracy Hernandez, seventh and Kerry Osmonson, 11th.
The Minnesota Vikings, behind Tommy Kramer’s 19 completions on 27 attempts for 257 yards, defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-7.
10 years ago — 2001
The Albert Lea boys’ soccer team defeated Winona Cotter 3-2. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Taylor Zimmerman, Josh Kasper and Josh Johnson.
In a Southeast Conference volleyball game, Glenville-Emmons defeated Grand Meadow 3-0. Alisa Rayman had six kills and Megan Avery five for Glenville.
Quarterback Paul Kleven threw two touchdown passes to Zach Adams and ran for another in Glenville-Emmons 20-0 shutout of Lyle-Pacelli. Kleven completed 10-of-18 passes for for 106 yards for G-E.
