Editorial: Get rid of your old trees

Clear your old trees before someone gets hurt.
Last week, a city worker was injured because a homeowner had failed to take care a large, hollow tree before it became too weak to stand.
Strong winds knocked the tree over last Thursday. A city worker was clearing it from the public space. The winds then toppled the remaining portion of the tree onto him.
When a city worker is injured, the entire community cares. That’s because a city worker doesn’t just work for the city government. He works on behalf of the entire community of Albert Lea, keeping this fine place looking ship-shape.
We send our best wishes to Monte Santee and his family in hopes he has a speedy recovery.
And we urge homeowners to remove their old trees, and, of course, be sure to plant a new one.
