BURNSVILLE — A sports car spun off an interstate highway Thursday and killed two workers when it crashed into a construction zone in the southern Twin Cities, the Minnesota State Patrol said.
The men were doing electrical work on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 35W when they were struck at about 12:30 p.m., Lt. Eric Roeske said.
One man died at the scene and the other died at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Roeske said. A third worker, who was not hurt, “heard the tires screech” and saw his two co-workers hit, Roeske said.
The workers were not Minnesota Department of Transportation employees but were working for Egan Co. of Brooklyn Park, a contractor helping install another MnPASS lane on the freeway, Roeske said.
In a statement, Egan Vice President Dawn L. Hofstrand said the company was “deeply saddened” to report the two workers’ deaths.
“Our thoughts are with their families during this difficult time,” the statement said.
A 21-year-old man from Raymore, Mo., was driving a Mitsubishi 3000GT alone and was not hurt, Roeske said. The driver was cooperating with investigators and was not arrested, Roeske said.
The driver was in the left lane and slowing for upcoming construction, but felt he was too close to the construction wall, braked and streered right, the State Patrol said. The car turned right harder than the driver thought it would. He then turned left to compensate, then right again, and the car spun out into the right ditch, striking the two workers, the patrol said.
The stretch of road where the crash happened was straight and dry, Roeske said. The area was reduced to one lane after the crash but reopened in time for rush hour, he said.
The State Patrol identified the victims as 47-year-old Craig D. Carlson of Ramsey and 44-year-old Ronald J. Rajkowski of St. Joseph.
The crash remains under investigation.
