Southwest art award winners
Students in Krystal Falk’s art classes at Southwest Middle School received the following awards.
Watercolor painting excellent artists were Luz Ruiz, Garret Piechowski, Eric Maier and Hailey Adams.
Watercolor painting most improved artists were Alex Becker and Gona Majiok.
Cubism interest collage excellent artists were Nathan Olsen, Nyaroun Manpign, Natalie Nafzger and Ty Harms.
Students from Robyn Bordewick’s second grade class at Halverson Elementary School study the alpaca that came to visit them on Read for the Record day.

Read for the Record day
All elementary schools in the Albert Lea School District participated in the Read for the Record day earlier this month. The students, 1,487 in all, read “Llama Llama Red Pajama” by Anna Dewdney. Sibley and Halverson elementaries had a visit from alpacas, and Hawthorne and Lakeview elementaries had llamas visit the school. Students wore pajamas to celebrate the day and Homecoming Week.
Free computer classes to be offered
Albert Lea Community Ed will offer free computer classes to anyone needing basic skills. The skills will begin very basic including how to turn on a monitor, how to use a mouse and the skills will advance to navigating the Internet and basics of Microsoft Office. The class will be free to the public, and anyone interested can sign up by calling Peggy Jahnke at 379-4867. The classes are one day, with a half hour for lunch that people will need to bring along. Class days are planned for Dec. 2, 3, 9 and 10, and people only need to sign up for one day of the class.

Hawthorne hosts first family night
Hawthorne Elementary School hosted a kindergarten pajama game night on Oct. 13, and families were invited to make educational learning games that they could take home.
The games consisted of a matching uppercase and lowercase letter file folder game, a number identification file folder game and reading books about parades, butterflies and honeybees. All the books were received through a grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation and each kindergarten student who attended was able to take one book home. Staff at the school would like to thank everyone who came and are planning another family night in December. The topic will be talking about current reading and math standards and how parents can work with children over winter break.

Art center presents ribbons
Sixth-grade students received ribbons for their paintings at the recent Art and Architecture Awareness Event at the Albert Lea Art Center.
First place ribbon winners were Michael Bremer, Levi Kermes and Alex Ulve.
Second place ribbon winners were Trenton Christensen, Presley Duenes, Leslie Hernandez and Carine Rofshus.
Third place ribbon winners were Matias Chavez, Desi Lashbrook, Michaela Nelson, Jared Osmon and Zachary Paulsen.
