Snapshot Editorial: Postal Service

It seems untrue when news reports say the U.S. Postal Service is failing. The federal agency successfully delivers letters and packages to every home and business in America six days a week. Even UPS and FedEx are major customers. They often rely on the Postal Service for the last leg of a delivery, the one to the doorstep. We understand that Congress wants the Postal Service to run like a business, but with Congress as the board of directors, that’s not possible. In fact, it is specious. The Constitution requires the federal government to run a mail service. And despite the financial constraints it faces, the Postal Service clearly is not failing in its the mission the Founding Fathers gave it. Congress ought to give the Postal Service the freedom it would need to compete in the private sector. Either that, or Congress needs to treat the Postal Service more like the federal government agency it is.
