50 years ago — 1961
Named to the 1961 Gopher All-Conference football team from New Richland were Mark Jensen, Dick Donovan, Bill Hanson and Bob Frisk, from Ellendale were David Hemmingway, Gary Harty and Bob Hagen, from Blooming Prairie were David Tonolli, Carl Youngdahl, Gary Moeykens, Tom Noble, Jim Ingvalson and David Cole.
Named to the Middle Eight All-Conference football team from Wells High School were Ron Meyer, Dave Schrieber, Steve Sonnek, Al Redman and Chuck Schultz.
Curt Pickavance scored a touchdown for Albert Lea High School in the Tigers’ 12-7 loss to Red Wing. The Tigers Big Nine Conference record dropped to 3-5.
Glenville High School raised their season record to 8-1 with a 20-12 win over Waseca Agriculture. Quarterback Glen Jensen scored all three touchdowns for Glenville.
25 years ago — 1986
Alden-Conger High School defeated Trimont 40-12 to win the Section 1 football title and a trip to the Minnesota Nine-Man State Football Tournament. Sophomore Mike Allen took the opening kickoff return for a 79 yard touchdown for A-C and quarterback Kevin Newman completed 12-of-23 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns.
Sophomore Sara Hartman of ALHS placed seventh in the Class AA Minnesota Girls State Cross Country meet.
Named as co-captains for the 1987 ALHS boys cross country team were Jeff Burns and Tom Reitveld and for the girls were Sara Hartman, Stephanie Hartman and Tracy Hernandez.
Named to the 1986 All-Gopher Conference volleyball team from Ellendale-Geneva were juniors Tina Wangsness and Kim Anderson.
10 years ago — 2001
The Lake Mills volleyball team defeated Aplington-Parkersburg by scores of 15-9, 15-10 and 15-10 to win Region 4 Class 1A title and advanced to the Iowa State Tournament. Katie Pederson had 20 kills and Kelsey Christianson 17 for the Bulldogs.
In an Iowa Class A playoff football game Northwood-Kensett defeated Rockwell-Swaledale 33-6. Nathan Loberg scored three touchdowns, Trevor Madsen and Tom Carmody one each for the Vikings. The Viking defense was led by James Erickson with 14 tackles and Jared Avelar with 12.
