Amos Christiansen, 100, of Albert Lea

The funeral service for 100-year-old Amos G. Christiansen will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Curtis Zieske will officiate. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the church.
Amos died on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
Amos Christiansen
Amos was born on July 2, 1911, in Jewell, Iowa, the son of Johannas “John” and Karoline “Carrie” (Peterson) Christiansen.
Until 1925, Amos lived with his parents and eight brothers and sisters on a farm near Graettinger, Iowa. The family moved to Albert Lea where Amos attended school. He married Alta Mortenson on May 18, 1939, and they lived and raised their two sons, Paul and James, in Albert Lea.
He worked at Wilson & Co., Smith Tire & Electric, Great Lakes Pipe Line and the Morlea Dairy until Marigold purchased their family business. In 1960, he was appointed park superintendent for the City of Albert Lea, a position he held until his retirement in 1976. He served on the City Council for six years, during which he served as acting mayor for a short period.
Amos was active in many civic organizations within the community, some of which included: Red Cross, past president of YMCA Board, Meals on Wheels and past president of Graceland Cemetery Board. Amos was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he had been a choir member for 21 years, and had actively served on many committees. He enjoyed woodworking, bowling, golfing and fishing.
Amos is survived by his sons Paul Christiansen of Mesa, Ariz., James (Judy) Christiansen of Wayzata, three grandsons: Tyler (Jennifer) Christiansen of Kenyon, Mark (Jody) Christiansen of Long Lake, and Michael (Sara) Christiansen of Champlin; great-grandchildren: Sarah, Rachel, Braeden, Brynna, Avery and Presley; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Johannas and Karoline Christiansen, his wife Alta Christiansen, brothers and sisters: Lydia Zitrick, Esther Frondal, Rebecca Bickford, Daniel Christiansen, Rachel Weigel, Joseph Christiansen, Samuel Christiansen and Leah Fynbo.
