Editorial: Be a part of this democracy

Do something about it. Run for office.
If you find yourself moaning all the time about the city, the county, the school, the state or whatever level of government you dislike, do something about it by tossing your hat in the ring.
This is America, after all. To be an American means having a sense of a civic duty.
Besides, local voters in 2010 had far too many single-choice elections. Voters deserve issues to be aired, and they deserve choices at the polls. That is how democracy functions best.
The filing period for elective offices starts in May; however, now is the time to begin the quiet, subtle talk with family and work about the time commitments running would take, including fundraising and, if successful, holding office.
Moreover, candidates ought not be afraid of losing. Voters can switch direction after a term. If the incumbent fails to impress, the candidate who lost becomes the one voters pick in the following election — if the person opts to run again.
To be sure, don’t campaign yet. People won’t pay attention now anyway. But we urge people to think about it.
