These are a few of my favorites

I often find it challenging to keep a positive attitude when confronted with the conflict and despair often evident in the news. However, I recently had several experiences that lifted my spirits and convinced me to strive to be less cynical:
• I carelessly forgot a valuable bracelet in a fitting room and it was returned to me. People are honest and just.
• I observed a father and his young daughter bell ringing in a cold storefront for the Salvation Army. People care about those less fortunate and teach that benevolence to their families.
• The high school chorale and caroliers on two separate nights in the same week shared their time and considerable talent with residents and families at a local retirement center. Youth are actively engaged in improving their community and the lives of others in it.
• Staff at a local school are quietly and anonymously donating money and purchasing, wrapping and delivering gifts to their school families who need their holiday brightened. People are generous.
• I visited a yarn shop in a rough Minneapolis neighborhood and noticed stacks of beautifully hand knit hats, scarves and mittens I thought were for sale. Instead, they were to be delivered to the area’s shelters for homeless people on Christmas Eve, the shop owner’s birthday, continuing a tradition he started several years ago. People are compassionate and selfless.
These are just a few examples, and I’m continuing to build my list of observations of goodness. I challenge you to do the same. I guarantee it will lift your spirits. Happy holidays!
