50 years ago — 1962
The Ellendale High School basketball team raised their Gopher Conference record to 4-2 with a 64-50 win over Waterville. The Raiders were led by Larry Pence with 18 points, Danny Wagner with 15, Don Morris with 12 and Chuck Crabtree with 10.
The Albert Lea wrestling team defeated the previous year’s state champions and current year’s No. 5-ranked Robbinsdale 24-16. Winning for the Tigers were Kenny Staugh at 103 pounds, Mike Callahan (112), Rog Kittelson (133), Bruce Palmer (154), Byron Boer (175) and Jeff Brooke at heavyweight.
Les Honstad scored 17 points, Brad Miller 13 and Rod Schultz 12 for Freeborn in their 53-46 basketball win over Delavan.
25 years ago — 1987
The Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team defeated Glenville 65-51 and improved its Gopher Conference record to 8-0. Tina Wangsness scored 22 points and Kim Anderson 16 for E-G. Glenville was led by Bridgite Matter with 20 points.
Magic 95 won the Albert Lea Park and Recreation Departments Women’s Upper C Bobcat Volleyball League. Team members were Cheryl Adams, Susie Paul, Becky Tennis Hanson, June Goodnature, Tricia Bellrichard and Mary Goodnature.
New Richland-Hartland defeated Janesville 48-44 in girls’ basketball. Jill Thompson scored 14 points and Jill Johnson 13 for NR-H.
Scott Heggen scored 25 points for Wells-Easton in their 72-50 win over Mapleton. W-E’s season record stood at 7-2.

Former Albert Lean Donald Schmidt was inducted into the National Wheelchair Softball Association Hall of Fame.
Callen Seberson of Albert Lea rolled his first 300 game in the Five B’s League at Holiday Lanes in Albert Lea.
The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team shut out Mankato West 5-0 and improved their Big Nine Conference record to 8-4-1. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Jasey Porter with two, Amy Leach, Brittany Arendt and Tessa Christenson.
