OWATONNA — One person is dead and another taken to the hospital after their car collided with a freight train.

Steele County sheriff’s officials said the crash happened around 12:30 p.m. Friday in the city of Meriden. Officials said the car was headed northbound on County Road 18 and collided with a Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern train headed westbound on the railroad tracks.

Authorities said the car’s passenger died at the scene. The driver was taken to the Owatonna Hospital. The driver’s condition is unknown.

Names of the victims have not been released. The sheriff’s office is investigating.
