50 years ago — 1962

In a basketball game for first place in the North Iowa Conference, Northwood defeated Lake Mills 81-79. Northwood improved to 12-0, and Lake Mills fell to 10-2 in the conference. Phil Johnson scored 32 points and Mike Lien 20 for the Vikings. The Bulldogs were led by Al Holstad with 33 points and Butch Pederson with 18.

Winners in the Albert Lea men’s City Bowling Tournament included: singles, Ron Godtland; doubles, Merlin and Terry Jensen; scratch all-events: Ells Godtland; team: Evans Rambler, Don Ehrich, Denton Urbin, Andy Tatarek, Don Kortz and Gene Beckmann.

The Freeborn High School basketball team raised their Border League record to 9-2 with a 66-53 win over Emmons. The Yeomen were led by Les Honstad with 22 points, Rod Schultz 18 and Al Beach 14. Bob Berg scored 18 points for the Eagles.

 

25 years ago — 1987

The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated Mankato 7-1. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Steve Stoltz with two, David Nystrom, Steve Nelson, Dan Lee, Dave Jacobsen and Scott Thompson. The Tigers overall record stood at 13-4-1.

Mike Petersen scored 15 points for the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team in their 47-31 victory over Faribault. The Tigers were in second place with an 8-3 record in the Big Nine Conference and were 16-4 overall.

The Glenville girls’ basketball team team defeated Faribault B.A. 61-46. Bridgite Matter scored 20 points, Jean Allison 15, Holly Tews and Jennifer Allison 10 for the Trojans.

 

10 years ago — 2002

Tyler Young scored 12 points and had 15 rebounds, and Josh Kasper had 11 points for Albert Lea boys’ basketball in their 46-37 win over Mankato East.

The 15th-ranked Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team defeated Purdue 73-64 and improved to 10-3 in the Big Ten Conference and 20-4 overall. Linsay Whalen scored (41) points for the Gophers.

The Glenville-Emmons basketball team raised their season record to 13-3 with a 66-63 win over Lake Mills. Paul Kleven with 19 points and Chase Rayman with 16 led the Wolverines.
