To the NRHEG Panthers.

These girls gave a good effort at state! The New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva High School girls’ basketball team is electrifying to watch, and star sophomore guard Carlie Wagner is backed up by a determined, hustling starting squad and a deep bench, which include her seventh-grader kid sisters. Many good teams have good athletes. This team does, too, but it also has determined-to-win athletes — the whole crew. It’s this attitude that makes this good team great. And going from good to great is not easy to do. Way to go, Panthers!

To Iowa lawmakers.

We are pleased to read that Iowa legislators sent the bill termed Kadyn’s Law to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, and we are pleased to read that he signed it into law. Strengthening the law for school bus stop-arm violations very much was needed in the wake of the tragedy of May 2011 in Worth County, and we hope this measure saves lives. Even if a single child is saved, it is worth it.

To Freeborn County Dancing with the Stars.

This was the sixth year for the annual fundraiser for the Freeborn County chapter of the American Red Cross. On Saturday night at the Albert Lea High School auditorium the community got to watch couples perform different dances. In previous years, donations have exceeded $25,000. All that money stays in Freeborn County and funds local Red Cross programs. The Red Cross provides immediate assistance for people impacted by disasters, including house fires and weather-related problems. It also provides training and education for first aid, CPR, baby-sitting, preparedness, pandemic and flu-related topics. The community is right to support such a good cause!
