A 79-year-old Ellendale woman won big last week after purchasing a $5 scratch game at Albert Lea’s Hy-Vee.

Mavis Roberts claimed her $100,000 prize at the lottery headquarters in Roseville on Wednesday.

Roberts said she purchased two $5 Gopher the Big Money scratch games when she went to buy groceries at the grocery store. She buys lottery tickets most of the time when she buys groceries, so she didn’t think much about it.

When she saw that one was a $100,000 winner, she said she was “very shocked.”

“It was just a freak deal, but I’m really happy about it,” Roberts said.

She said she’s been buying lottery tickets for at least 10 years, and she’s been lucky before — winning $1,000 and $5,000, but never anything more.

She plans to use the money to clean up more of the damage at her home from a June 17, 2010, tornado not covered by her insurance.

According to a news release, there are still three out of five $100,000 Gopher the Big Money prizes to be claimed.

Overall odds of winning a prize by playing the game are 1 in 2.76.
