The Freeborn County sheriff’s detective on paid administrative leave since December has submitted his resignation.

Sheriff Bob Kindler on Friday confirmed the resignation of Corey Farris, who has been employed with the Sheriff’s Office since November 1997.

Farris had been on leave since Dec. 15 pending an investigation by internal affairs of the Minneapolis Police Department.

Because Farris was a member of the South Central Drug Task Force — which involved multiple surrounding counties — the Minneapolis Police Department was asked to conduct the investigation. The task force is made up of officers and detectives from law enforcement agencies from Waseca, Faribault, Freeborn and Steele counties who enforce controlled substance laws.

Kindler did not know when the investigation would be completed.

Farris said he submitted the resignation because he decided it was time to change and do something else.

“It’s time to move on,” he said.

Farris said he has not spoken with investigators yet, but noted he received a letter that identified four areas that the investigators wanted to talk about.

Though he would not name the areas per advice from his attorney, he said the concerns were not related to anything criminal, but were related to his employment. Farris was convicted in March 2001 for misdemeanor disorderly conduct for inappropriately touching an 18-year-old boy staying in his home, according to court documents. He was sentenced to a stayed 30-day jail sentence, with one year of supervised probation.

Since, he has continued his work with the Sheriff’s Office and up until May 2011 worked as a detective and supervisor. At that point, the Sheriff’s Office went through a reorganization, after which Farris became solely a detective.

The resignation has been submitted to the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners for formal acceptance during its normal Tuesday meeting.
