50 years ago — 1962

In the semifinal round of the Region 2 basketball tournament, Wells defeated St. James 65-56. Ron Meyer led the Wildcats with 23 points. Wells defeated Windom 54-49 to win the Region 2 championship and a trip to the state tournament. Meyer scored 25 points, and Al Redman and Tom Schultz earned 12 points each.

Named to the Border League All-Conference basketball team were the following players: Dick Dahl, Mike Brietenfeld and Terry Smith of Elmore, Al Beach and Brad Miller of Freeborn, Lowell Meyer of Kiester, Jack Brandt of Delavan, Bob Berg of Emmons, Tom Lund of Bricelyn, Milo Olsen of Frost and Don Brummer of Alden.

Named to the Gopher All-Conference team were the following and players: Gary Harty and Larry Pence of Ellendale, Dave Tonolli and Don Matson of Blooming Prairie, Chuck Wosbrock of Medford, Gary Roemhildt and Lunis Hebl of Waterville, Al Santon and Jim Dahl of Janesville, Dennis Schwitchenberg of Morristown.

 

25 years ago — 1987

The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team opened play in Region 1AA with an 84-53 victory over Northfield. The Tigers had balanced scoring with Ted Jirele and Steve Dittrich scoring 12 points each and Mike Petersen, Greg Deyak and Tim Struck with 10 points each.

Albert Lea had five wrestlers earn Big Nine All-Conference honors, including Kenny Jaques at 105 pounds, Kevin Kermes (126), Alex Skaar (138), Randy Petersen (155) and Kevin Schiltz (185).

Mike Petersen, Tim Struck and Greg Deyak of the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team were named to the Big Nine All-Conference team. Receiving honorable mention from the Tigers were Ted Jirele and Todd Wright.

 

10 years ago — 2002

Ascension Lutheran won the regular season and playoffs of the Brotherhood Dartball League. Following are the 10 players with the highest batting average.
