On May 7, the Albert Lea High School band department will present its final concert of the year. The performance will be at 7 p.m. in the Albert Lea High School auditorium, and will feature the Tiger Band, Symphonic Band and Concert Band. Tickets are available at the door, and are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Children preschool and under are free. Family music passes and senior passes also work for this event.
At the concert, students will receive their medals and certificates from the State Solo and Ensemble contest, and the John Phillip Sousa award for band, as well as the Louis Armstrong award for jazz, will be presented. Graduating seniors will also be recognized.
Each band was given the opportunity to help choose one of their songs for the concert. The Tiger Band, which is made up of eighth- and ninth-grade students, chose “Pirates of the Caribbean.” They will also be performing “Urban Scenes” by Andrew Boysen, Jr. The 10th-grade Symphonic Band chose “Bohemian Rhapsody,” by Queen, and will also be performing “Knights of Destiny,” by Michael Sweeney, and an arrangement of “God Bless America.” The Concert Band, made up of juniors and seniors, chose selections from the musical “Wicked.” They will also perform their Big Nine Music Festival program, which includes “His Honor,” a march by Henry Fillmore, “Dusk,” by Steven Bryant, and “Chorale and Shaker Dance II,” by Minneapolis-based composer John Zdechlik. All three groups are led by Director of Bands Suzanne Mauer.
