Council mulls dog park

Discussions re-emerged Thursday among the Albert Lea City Council about whether to bring a dog park to Albert Lea.

It has been four years since the council considered the idea.

First Ward Councilor John Schulte V said he asked City Manager Chad Adams to look into putting in a temporary dog park on the south end of the Blazing Star Landing — on the northwest corner of the fenced in area.

The project would cost an estimated $7,600 in extra fencing.

He said he thought the temporary site would help the city figure out how much interest there is in the project.

Several councilors said while they supported a dog park, they did not support the use of city funds to pay for a temporary amenity.

“I’m definitely for a dog park in this community, but I think we need to find the place where it’s going to be,” 2nd Ward Councilor Larry Baker said.

City staff agreed.

Adams said he hoped if the city focused on selecting a site for the park, someone from the community might come forward to pay for the costs.

In 2008, the consensus of the City Council and the Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was that dog park supporters need to raise funds for the structure and installation, though the city could provide land and maintenance. City leaders at the time pointed toward other then-new additions — such as the Kiwanis Basketball Court, the playground at Frank Hall Park and the disc golf course at Bancroft Bay Park — where locals raised funds and provided labor, rather than the city paying a full price tag.
