One state highway in Albert Lea will see improvements this year under the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s 2012 construction program.
According to the project list released Thursday, about three miles of roadway on Minnesota Highway 13 from U.S. Highway 69 to Interstate 90 will receive a bituminous mill and overlay.
The project, one of more than 300 across the state, is expected to cost $2.8 million. It is slated to take place in August and September.
Long-term lane closures should be expected during construction, according to MnDOT.
Also impacting area residents will be continued work on Interstate 35 in Rice and Steele counties with the installation of transportation system devices at various locations along the highway.
The cost for this project is expected to be about $824,000, and minimal traffic impacts are expected.
The project list states pedestrian ramps are also slated in Hollandale, Glenville and Ellendale, along with bridge deck seal at various locations in Freeborn County.
Cracks will be sealed at various locations in the county, and rumble strips are expected to be installed as well.
MnDOT Commissioner Tom Sorel said the construction projects in Freeborn County and across the state will aid the state’s economy by supporting thousands of jobs.
“MnDOT is focused on improving our highways and maximizing the capacity of the system,” Sorel said. “Our transportation system is vital to the state’s economy and to its citizens’ quality of life. We want to ensure that it provides a safe and efficient trip for all users.”
This year’s state highway construction projects also include work on the Interstate 694/Highway 10 interchange in the Twin Cities and the final wrap-up of bridge and pavement replacement on a section of I-35 in Duluth.
MnDOT urges drivers to stay alert in construction zones and to minimize distractions.
The news releases states people should follow posted speed limits and expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
Drivers can check 511 for information about traffic and road conditions.
Resurfacing U.S. Highway 65 and U.S. Highway 69, two of the bumpiest routes in Freeborn County, remain slated for work in 2013.
