Karate kids place at Riceville tournament

Northland Karate students Katherine Sime and Jacob Moffit competed in the 2012 Riceville Martial Arts open tournament on March 24. The tournament took place in Riceville, Iowa, and both students were awarded for top sportsmanship.

RICEVILLE—Two students from Northland Karate in Albert Lea competed at the 2012 Riceville Martial Arts open tournmaent in Riceville, Iowa, on March 24.

Each student placed in more than one category.

Katherine Sime was awarded second place for forms and breaking. She won first place for sparring and was also awarded the top female sportsmanship trophy.

The other student, Jacob Moffit, earned first place in forms and breaking. Moffit took second place in sparring and was named the grand champion winner after competing against all first place form winners at the tournament. In addition, Moffit was awarded the top male sportsmanship trophy.

The students were instructed by Northland Karate owners Dana and Natalie Nelson.

Northland Karate is located at 206 S. Broadway Ave. in Albert Lea and has a second location in Ellendale.
