Police warn of peddlers

The Albert Lea Police Department is warning the community about a potential peddler scam that asks residents to donate money toward the purchase of backpacks for troops overseas.
Albert Lea Police Lt. J.D. Carlson said a 20-year-old white man with short blond hair was found near 506 Ulstad Ave. Tuesday, soliciting funds in support of Blue Star Moms. The man was described as being about 6 feet 1 inches tall and 180 pounds. He provided Arkansas identification.
Carlson said though Blue Star Moms is a valid organization, the organization never solicits door to door, according to a chapter president in California. They would also not have an Arkansas native soliciting on behalf of California in Minnesota.
Police were alerted to the peddler after a man who had been talked into giving a donation went to the Albert Lea Armory to ask about the solicitor’s validity. Local soldiers at the armory contacted police.
The man was found with a laminated copy of the Blue Star Moms homepage that had a yellow ribbon decal attached.
Carlson said with the troops scheduled to return to Minnesota in the next few weeks, the opportunity has come up for people to take advantage of people’s patriotism.
He said the city does not have a peddler’s license requirement, so if people have concerns about peddlers soliciting, they should make sure to research that person or organization before donating or purchasing items.
“If not sure of validity, consult with other resources before donating your money,” he added. “Contact local law enforcement for support.”
As of Tuesday afternoon only one person had contacted police about the man.
