BELCHERTOWN, Mass. — The driver who died when her car crashed into a utility pole in Belchertown and burst into flames has been tentatively identified as a University of Massachusetts graduate student from Minnesota.

The district attorney says he believes the victim of Monday night’s crash is 26-year-old Ashley Ellen Goetz of Eagan. The DA is awaiting final confirmation from the medical examiner.

Goetz was pursuing a master’s degree in English and fiction writing at the nearby University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Authorities say her car was headed south when it apparently drifted into the northbound lane before striking the pole. Power was knocked out to about 400 area homes. Goetz was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.
