Dorothy Arlene Low, 88, Northwood, Iowa, died Sunday, June 17, 2012, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

A funeral service for Dorothy will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, 1000 1st Ave. North, Northwood, Iowa, with the Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Dorothy was born on Oct. 14, 1923, in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Matilda (Hanson) Gentz. She attended rural schools in Mitchell County. Dorothy was united in marriage to Russell Low, and to this marriage five children were born: Arlene, Delbert, Arlen, Lonnie and Claire “Rocky.” After their marriage Russell and Dorothy farmed for many years east of Northwood, and moved into Northwood in 1973.

Dorothy also worked at Carroll George and the Viking Restaurant in Northwood. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, watching her stories on TV, quilting and dancing with her friends at the Eagles Club in Albert Lea, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and going to her grandchildren’s ball games.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood, and the Eagles Club in Albert Lea.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Arlene Meland and special friend, Gary Pregler of Asbury, Iowa, Arlen (Ann) Low and Lonnie (Mary) Low of Northwood; her daughter-in-law, Connie Low of Northwood; 10 grandchildren: Jim (Brenda) Meland of Northwood, Deb (Dave) Schnack of Milford, Neb., Angie (Dave) Drews of Clinton, Iowa, Scott Meland of Dewitt, Iowa, Troy Low of Northwood, Tory (Travis) Meyer of Bolan, Iowa, Tom Low and fiancé Britney Arendt of Northwood, Cory Low and special friend Amy of Byron and Britney and Shelby Low of Northwood; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; as well as many other nieces, nephews, and many other extended family members and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; two sons: Delbert Allen and Claire “Rocky” Low; four brothers: Art, William, Roy and Raymond Gentz; and two sisters: Florence Bottleman and Wilma Thompson.
