50 years ago – 1962
• The Albert Lea VFW baseball team opened their season with a 10-3 victory over Wells. Jim Bratvold of Albert Lea had two hits and drove in five runs.
• The Albert Lea Colonels opened their season with a 9-8 win over Owatonna. Catcher Myron Hoffman had four RBIs and Charlie Weathers homered for the Colonels. Dick Oliphant was the winning pitcher.
25 years ago – 1987
• Named to the All-Border League Softball Team were the following: from Alden-Conger: Ann Bleckeberg, Deb Coughlin, Pam Dulas and Vickie Thomas; from Freeborn: Joleen Ignaszewski, Susie Orbell and Lori Jensen and from Emmons: Brenor Yost.
• Named to the All-Gopher Conference baseball team: from Glenville: Randy Severtson, Paul Tordoff, Rob Vierkant and Jeff Vierkant; from Ellendale-New Richland: Ed Peterson, Travis Massey, Tomm Richards and Mike Roessler. Massey was also named to All-District 2A team and All-Region 1A honor squad. Richards was also named to the All-District 2A team.
• The Albert Lea High School girls’ golf team won the Region 1AA championship. Named to the All-Big Nine Conference team from ALHS were Jana Hellie, Debbie Kroc and Lisa Wolfe.
• The Alden-Conger American Legion baseball team improved to 2-0 with a 7-5 win over Albert Lea. Winning pitcher Kevin Newman had 10 strikeouts. Chad Miller, Tim Staloch and Toby Koziolek each had two hits for A-C.
10 years ago – 2002
• Results in Class A from the Minnesota State track and field tournament for New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva athletes: Nicole Lunning placed third in the shot put; Camille Kyte fourth in the 200-meter dash and Kalisha Anthony eighth in the pole vault.
• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference Baseball Team from Albert Lea High School were Jay Link and Isaac Walton. Adam Highum received honorable mention.
• Richie Mathis had three hits and Matt Learn hit a two-run homer for the Glenville-Emmons American Legion in their 11-9 win over Blooming Prairie.
• Derek Goodnature had three hits for the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team in their 7-6 victory over Owatonna.
