50 years ago – 1962

• In a 13-inning softball game in the church league, Grace Lutheran defeated Conger 2-1. John Thorson pitched a four-hitter for the win, while losing pitcher Ken Heine gave up seven hits.

• The Albert Lea VFW raised their season record to 3-0 with a 3-0 win over New Ulm. Winning pitcher was Jim Bratvold and John Hegland had two RBIs for Albert Lea.

• Forty-one year old Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals broke four major league baseball career records during the 1962 season. The career records Musial broke were total bases, total hits, total games and total runs scored.

25 years ago – 1987

• Named to the All-Border League Baseball Team: from Alden-Conger was Kevin Newman, Bret Kitner and Troy Newman; from South Central was Terry Hintz, Kevin Hamson and Scott Oelerking; from Freeborn was Toby Koziolek and Tim Staloch from Emmons.

• Jonathon Christian, a 1983 graduate of Albert Lea High School, was named the Most Valuable Player on the 1987 Rice University golf team.

• Minnesota Twins pitcher Bert Blyleven pitched his 55th major league shutout as the Twins defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0.

10 years ago – 2002

• Inducted into the Freeborn County Fast-Pitch Hall of Fame at the 36th annual banquet were Al Batt, Tim Elmer, Fred Schaub and Floyd Wangen.

• The Albert Lea U-14 fast pitch girls’ team split a double-header with United South Central.Winning the first game 16-3 and losing the second game 11-10. In the first game the winning pitcher was Liz Thompson. Chelsea Barrett and Tatum Roberts each had two hits. Evan Sather had two hits for A.L. in their second game loss.

• The Albert Lea U-14 fast pitch girls swept Stewartville in their second double header of the week 22-5 and 15-9. In the first game April Balsley, Niki Hendrickson and Marissa Cotttrel each had three hits. Evan Sather had four hits and four runs scored in the second game.
