50 years ago – 1962
• The Albert Lea Colonels of the Southern Minnesota League defeated Austin 7-3. Charlie Weathers homered and drove in two runs for the Colonels. Dick Oliphant was the winning pitcher.
• In the Albert Lea slow pitch league Church Offset defeated the Jaycees 19-7. Jim Malepsy hit two home runs and Delano hit one for Church Offset.
• Camilo Pascual of the Minnesota Twins raised his season record to 11-4 with a shut out of the New York Yankees 5-0. Third baseman Rich Rollins had four hits and four RBIs for the Twins.
25 years ago – 1987
• Jon Schmitz, a 1979 graduate of Albert Lea High School, was named the new head coach for the boys’ swimming team and Todd Gregerson was named the new basketball head coach at ALHS.
• The Alden American Legion baseball team improved to 3-0 in the Five Star League with a 10-3 victory over New Richland. Winning pitcher Mark Stoneback, Toby Koziolek, Kevin Newman and Mark Wedin each had three hits for Alden.
• In the opening round of the eighth annual Maynard “Pedro” Peterson Memorial Invitational baseball tournament the Albert Lea American Legion defeated Fairmont 12-4. Mark Calderon picked up the win and Brad Tullberg had three hits, including one home run, and three RBIs.
• Northwood-Kensett, behind the three-hit pitching of Jim Heller, defeated Belmond 9-3 in Iowa high school baseball. Heller had three hits for N-K.
10 years ago – 2002
• Mitch Meier from Glenville-Emmons was named the Albert Lea Tribune Area Baseball Player of the Year and Louis Toulouse from G-E was named the Albert Lea Tribune Area Baseball Coach of the Year.
Members named to the Albert Lea Tribune Area Baseball Team: from ALHS were Adam Highum, Jay Link and Isaac Walton; from G-E were Nick Flatness, Paul Kleven, Richie Mathis. Mitch Meier and Jay Wadding. Players from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva were Clark Field, Brett Schultz, Seth Tukua and Jens Wyrum and from United South Central were David Hove, Cole Iverson and Dan Voigt.
