2 girls killed in crash in Worth County

HANLONTOWN, Iowa — Two young girls from Worth County were killed and another was critically injured Tuesday morning after the driver of a minivan they were riding in reportedly ran a stop sign and was broadsided by a semi.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Cassidy Stehn, 9, of Northwood, and Hana Riedinger, 12, of Kensett, Iowa, died at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa from injuries related to the crash.
Destiny Bruce, 10, of Northwood, was listed in critical condition at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, as of Tuesday night.
Three other girls in the minivan were also injured, along with the van’s driver, Nicole Streets, 22, of Northwood.
The State Patrol indicates the minivan was southbound on Worth County Road S28 at 9:30 a.m. when it ran a stop sign at the intersection with Iowa Highway 9 and was struck broadside by a semi coming eastbound on Highway 9. The semi was driven by Steven Brodersen, 59, of Manly, Iowa.
Brodersen was treated for injuries at the scene.
The other girls injured in the minivan were Jaela Parks, 10, Maeghan Petznick, 10, and Hailey Schaefer, 11, all of Northwood.
As of Wednesday morning, Petznick and Schaefer were listed in fair condition at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, and Parks had been treated and released from the hospital. Streets was also treated and released.
The report stated all people in both vehicles were wearing their seat belts.
Streets was taking the girls to a canoe outing at Clear Lake, according to the Mason City Globe Gazette.
The crash remains under investigation.
