MINNEAPOLIS — U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has picked up the support of a police group that backed her opponent six years ago.

The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police endorsed Klobuchar for re-election Tuesday. Its president, Gary Cayo, says the first-term Minnesota Democrat and former prosecutor has been an effective advocate for law enforcement officers.

In a joint statement, Klobuchar says she’s fought to make sure police have the tools they need to protect the public.

The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police represents 2,700 officers in Minnesota. It endorsed GOP candidate Mark Kennedy in 2006.

Klobuchar won the endorsement earlier of another law enforcement group, the Minnesota Peace and Police Officers Association, which represents over 8,500 members.
