Russell Irving Matheson, 92, was born on the Iron Range in Carson Lake, near Hibbing, on April 21, 1920. He grew up in Penobscot Location and Hibbing. He passed on July 21, 2012, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

His parents are William and Estelle Matheson and siblings are June, Helena, Enid, Glady and Bunny.

Russ served during World War II in France and Germany from 1941 to 1945. He married Patricia Kealy in 1946. He attended the University of Minnesota and Dunwoody Institute, then worked as a linotype operator at newspapers and printing plants in southern Minnesota.

Russ and Pat had three children: Barbara Hindi (Munther) of Campbell, Calif., Bruce (deceased) and John (Kathy) of Minneapolis. Grandchildren are Susanne Blaine (Darren) and Hamody Hindi both of Oregon; Zaynah Hindi of Beruit Lebanon, Max and Peter Matheson of Minneapolis. Great-grandchildren are Hannah and Ruben Blaine.

The original Good Samaritan, and a very humble man, Russ asked little and gave much. He saw the good in everyone, and beauty in the simplest things. He enjoyed camping along the North Shore and volunteering at the Albert Lea Art Center where he met his dear friend Harlan.

Above all else Russ loved his family deeply, was very proud of his Scottish heritage and remained a devoted Christian scientist.

Not surprisingly, Russ requested no service. The family would like to give a special thanks to Polly, Laurie and the wonderful caregivers at The Lodge on Summit Oaks Hospice in Burnsville. Russ will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling.
